If you have ever experienced the sensation of "butterflies in your stomach", you will have had a first hand understanding of the connection between the gut and stress. Stress over long, continuous periods can have many adverse health affects, but most notable is stomach issues, such as heartburn, indigestion, pain, or diarrhea. 

This formula works to ease adrenal fatigue (AKA stress) and support digestion. Other benefits include calming the heart and mind, easing tension, insomnia, nourishing the Spleen to aid digestion, increasing poor appetite, and eliminating dampness that can cause diarrhea.  

Shi Shen Tang is a mild formula that can also be given to children that are picky eaters to improve appetite and relieve loose stools.

Lotus Seed (Lian Zi, 莲子)

Fox Nuts (Qian Shi, 芡实)

 THE HERBS EXPLAINED

Chinese Yam Rhizome (Shan Yao / Huai Shan, 山药 / 淮山) - Because of its neutral nature, this herb works as a supportive digestive aid, balances the Kidneys to relieve stress and anxiety, enhances energy, and supports weakness.

Lotus Seed (Lian Zi, 莲子) - Supporting poor appetite and weak digestion, this herb also supports the Heart and calms the spirit to ease anxiety and stress. It also supports the Kidneys to strengthen essence. 

Fox Nuts (Qian Shi, 芡实) - This herb strengthens the Kidney to secure the essence and improve fertility, and eases loose stools by strengthening the Spleen to relieve dampness. 

Poria (Fu Shen, 茯神) - Quiets the Heart and spirit in cases of frayed nerves or insomnia, harmonizes the middle and invigorates the Spleen to leach excess dampness. 

 

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS  

  • 350g pork ribs (Can be made without for vegetarian option)
  • 6-8 cups water
  • 4-5 dried scallops (optional)
  • 3 candied dates (optional)

1. Gently rinse the herbs.

2. Parboil 4-5 pork ribs for about 5 minutes and discard the water. Rinse to clean off any lingering scum.

3. Add the meat/mushrooms, carrots (if using), and entire herb packet into 6-8 cups of water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and let simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour. You may need to occasionally skim off the scum, but parboiling the meat should prevent this.

4. Season with salt to taste, and enjoy hot or warm!


RECOMMENDED DOSE 

Each batch of this soup is 4 servings, and can be consumed 1-2 times over a number of days. Herbs can be eaten alongside soup for increased benefits. 

Since this formula is neutral in natural, it is ideal for regular consumption.

Always drink warm or hot!
