Main Medical Uses: Its principle functions are to clear heat, eliminate toxins and drain pus. It is also used to invigorates the blood, dispels blood stasis, resolves bruises and stops pain. Eliminates Phlegm and reduces abscesses (internal and topical)
Benefits: It is used in the treatment of intestinal abscesses, pulmonary abscesses and surface sores due to Fire-toxins such as carbuncles. Other uses include pain and obstruction due to Heat-induced Blood stasis, particularly in the abdomen and chest; post-partum pain; post-operative pain.
Cautions and Contra-Indications: It should be avoided in cases with deficiency of Spleen and Stomach manifesting as poor appetite and diarrhea, abdominal pain from Cold. Use caution during pregnancy and then only if absolutely necessary. Overdose may cause nausea and dizziness. Concurrent administration of this herb with sedatives such as barbiturates, antihistamines, narcotic analgesics, benzodiazepines and many others, will lead to prolonged sedation.
